Facing the Unexpected

Our family received some news this week that will bring some big changes for us this summer.  This isn’t an uncommon occurrence– things change and move around and transition regularly in this life (in America or overseas!)  Sometimes the news looks good– a pregnancy, an engagement, a new job offer; sometimes the news looks bad– a friend moving away, a job loss, a negative pregnancy test.  It’s seems life is always throwing us pitches that we didn’t (or couldn’t) anticipate.

This morning I read Psalm 139– one of my favorite passages of Scripture.  Verse 16 jumped out at me vividly today, though I’ve read and heard it probably a thousand times in my life:

…in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.

Before any of my days came about, the Lord knew them all.  In fact, He had them all written down!  That realization was so comforting!  All of the sudden, I wasn’t facing a scary unknown change, I was seeing that God had days planned and written down for us that were going to look different than we first thought.

Wow!  That was exactly the perspective shift I needed this week!
